Top 5 Things to Do in Santorini this April

Is Santorini busy in April?

That might be the first question on your mind when considering this Greek island for your spring getaway. April is part of the shoulder season in Santorini, which comes with a few perks: lower prices, fewer crowds, and a calmer vibe. That said, some places may still be closed or in a state of preparation for the summer season.

While it’s not quite beach weather yet, the island still offers plenty to explore. You won’t find sunbeds out on the beaches just yet, and public transportation is more limited—only a few buses may run from Fira and Karterados to the surrounding villages and coast.

So, How Many Days Should You Spend in Santorini?

A stay of three nights and four days is a great start. This allows for a balanced itinerary of relaxation, hiking, exploring villages, and enjoying local cuisine. Below are five top recommendations—your ultimate guide to things to do in Santorini April edition:

1. Hike from Fira to Oia

This is easily the #1 activity on any “Things to do in Santorini April” list. The spring weather is just right—not too hot or too cold—so you don’t need to hit the trail at the crack of dawn. The hike is light to moderate, with a few steep sections. While you don’t need serious hiking boots, we definitely don’t recommend doing it in flip-flops.

This scenic trail hugs the caldera rim and leads you to the iconic town of Oia. Along the way, you’ll spot dramatic volcanic rock layers in shades of red, yellow, green, and black—testimony to the island’s powerful geological past. Once you reach Oia, reward yourself with a coffee and a scoop of gelato. Lolita’s Gelato is always our go-to spot!

2. Rent a Vehicle and Explore the villages

April’s lighter traffic and abundance of parking make it a great time to rent a car and explore at your own pace.

Start your morning in Pyrgos, a hilltop village whose name literally means “tower.” Climb to the top for panoramic views, then drive up to Profitis Ilias, the island’s highest point. If the monastery is open, you can even pick up local products from the small shop there.

Next, head south. Cruise past the long Perissa–Perivolos Beach, stop at the striking Vlychada Beach, and stroll through the historical center of Emporio village. End your day at Faros Lighthouse, Santorini’s southernmost tip, and watch the sun sink into the Aegean.

3. Take a Half-Day Volcano Boat Trip

It might not be swimming season yet, but a boat trip to the volcano is still a must. Tours typically last around 3 hours and include a hike on the volcanic islet and a stop at the Hot Springs. Due to recent seismic activity, boats depart from Athinios Port with included bus transfers. If you’re staying at Caveland, your pickup point will be in front of Zotos Bakery, just a 10-minute walk away.

Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring a windproof jacket for the boat ride, and definitely don’t forget your camera! You’ll have about 90 minutes to explore the volcano and 30 minutes near the Hot Springs—brave souls can even jump into the water!

4. Join a Greek Sampling Dinner

No trip to Greece is complete without a proper feast. Santorini’s local dishes include tomato fritters, fava (split pea puree), Greek salad, tzatziki, and even fried feta with honey. At Caveland, we organize a Greek sampling dinner twice a week at a local restaurant. It’s a fun, delicious, and social way to experience island cuisine. Add it to your Things to do in Santorini April list!

For prices and dates, email our reception in Caveland or sign up when you arrive. For April, we’re going out on Tuesdays and Saturdays!

5. Celebrate Orthodox Easter

If you’re visiting in April, you’re in for a cultural treat. Greek Orthodox Easter is the most important holiday of the year.

On Good Friday, join the evening procession in one of the villages—Pyrgos is especially atmospheric. On Holy Saturday, light a candle at one of the beautifully decorated local churches and attend the midnight resurrection servicein Fira. Be sure to bring a candle—they’ll share the flame as part of the celebration. Easter Sunday is for feasting! Book a table at a local taverna for a traditional lamb roast. Ask our reception about Easter festivities and check out our organized transfers to local celebrations.
